BCC - Bursary Cordinating Programme - 2nd Student Development Seminar
The Bursary Coordinating Committee (BCC) hosted the second Development & Empowerment seminar on 2nd October 2004 at WAMY Youth Centre, 189 Clare Road, Clare Estate and attracted over 90 students from different tertiary institutions around KwaZulu Natal.

The BCC was established by WAMY; Women’s Cultural Group; South African National Bursary Fund (SANBUF); IDB Scholarship Trust; Al-Ansaar; Iqra Charity (Albaraka) and Natal Memon Jamaat to coordinate the disbursements of bursaries and to contribute to the development of the students and to offer services to our students in career advice, learnerships, community outreach programmes, etc.

The aim of the seminar was to empower and develop bursary students who are sponsored by the different bursary institutions.

21 students from WAMY’s ; 27 from SANBUF; 3 from IDB; 12 from Women’s Cultural Group, 10 from As-Salaam Skills Training Centre and 16 other participants were among the students who attended the seminar.

Some of the topics that were facilitated on the day included: Motivation & Whole Brain Learning - Dr. Swartz; Dealing with Islamaphobia - Hafez Fuzail Soofie; The New World of Work - Ahmed Shaikh; The Dichotomy of the Muslim Identity - Shenaaz Docrat.

Dr. Swartz facilitated a session which dealt with preparing for the examinations. His talk covered topics on; setting goals, motivation, self-esteem, focus, emotion, process and diligence.

Hazef Fuzail Soofie focused on “dealing with Islamaphobia”. He started by explaining the historical background on Islamaphobia, identifying the cause of Islamaphobia and the channels where by it is being projected, how to deal with it and what counter measures to take.

Ahmed Sheik addressed the audience on changing the world of work, how fast the world is moving and how important it is to keep up with the changing world.
Sister Shenaaz Docrat spoke about “the dichotomy of the Muslim identity”. Her talk encouraged the youth to keep their Islamic identity as it is prescribed in the Quran and Ahaadith.

WAMY thanks all Bursary Coordinating Committee member organisations for encouraging their bursary students to attend the seminar, the facilitators for their inspiring and educative talks to our students, the audience in general, Cheekys and Habibiya Bakers & Confectioners for donating refreshments, cakes and snacks, and all who assisted in making this seminar / workshop a success.
There is a need for a strong Islamic training component linked to the students bursary grant. The students must be obliged to participate in tarbiyyah programmes in the hope of conscientising them of their role as, their role and responsibilities as Muslims and contribute to their growth and developments as Khalifatullah-Fil-Ard.

WAMY on behalf of the BCC intends facilitating Tarbiyyah programmes for all the bursary students, this would include attendance of lectures, seminars, workshops, camps and community service programmes.
